Your rights as a citizen in a police state such as Belgium.

In principle, as a citizen in Belgium, you have no rights when the police stop you.

The Belgian police may stop and question anyone they encounter on the street, and everyone who is asked for their ID must have it and show it to the police.

If the police feel like doing this multiple times a day with the same citizens in the same area, you as a citizen have no right to refuse.

The only right you have as a citizen is the right to remain silent because if you say something, the police can and will use it against you.

This is precisely the issue that leads to riots in social neighborhoods.

Many young people from certain ethnic backgrounds often feel targeted as a result.

They become the target of local and federal police, who do nothing but stop and check people every day in areas like Anderlecht.

This sometimes leads to very tragic consequences such as the death of an 11-year-old boy on a scooter who tried to escape the police through the park; the police ran over the 11-year-old boy on the scooter, resulting in the boy's death.

Police officers are also motivated under the threat of poor evaluations when they do not write enough tickets, manufacturers of speed enforcement equipment and breathalyzers receive a commission based on the number of fines, which only exacerbates the situation.

More and more people feel targeted, and this comes at the expense of police officers who do their job for the right reasons.

Police state car.
Police state car.

But it is clear that the police state urgently needs to be restrained.

The powers of the police must be quickly scaled back.

Powers such as stop and search should be reduced.

Those who do nothing wrong should not be stopped by the police.

It is already bad enough that those who gain power often abuse it, let alone giving people so much power that they can do whatever they want without control.

It has been proven for decades that the police state does not work, there is no substantial reduction in crime, there are not fewer drug dealers, burglaries, or other offenses.

Due to strict gun laws, citizens have no chance of defending themselves and are reliant on the police, who often take more than 30 minutes to arrive at the scene of a crime.

It even seems that criminals have more rights than citizens. Victims of a crime often have to pay for their own lawyer while the criminal is provided with a lawyer by the government at the expense of the victim and taxpayers. The identity of criminals is often kept secret, especially in cases of rape or other sexual offenses. And as a cherry on top, pedophiles receive special protection.

The priorities of a police state are not safety but securing revenue.

Fines generate billions annually for the state treasury while both petty and serious crime only cost money.

While pensioners can hardly afford a retirement home, criminals live in golden cages, warm, dry, and with at least three meals a day.

That is to say, the criminals who are convicted.

The majority of criminals roam freely for years before possibly receiving a conviction, many of whom are also acquitted based on procedural errors.

So far the police state Belgium.
